History
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, there was a thriving deaf cricket scene with up to 18 teams taking part in a league and also cup competition. However, since the early 1990s and notably since 2000 after the South Africa situation (see international ), interest in deaf cricket has declined, with the number of teams dropping to just 8, which resulted in the league format being discontinued. The National Deaf Knockout competition continues on an annual basis. The current cup holders are Sheppards Bush, from London.
It is good to report that some deaf teams do play in hearing leagues like Sheffield and Bradford, and complete well against hearing teams. There are around 100 deaf cricketers participating in the deaf cup, plus many cricketers who participate for hearing clubs in league matches.
